How Guardian Angels came to be – By Maxine Lambourn
The key to realising a dream is to focus not on success, but significance – and then, even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning. – Oprah Winfrey 1954
A person who realised this during a really confusing time of her life, is Marcel van Doorn. As 2010 dawned she was feeling a little lost and was looking for a way to reach out to the elderly and ill folk in our community. She specifically wanted to target those at home without transport and needing a little company. Guardian Angels was born in her mind. She wanted to give people wings again by encouraging willing and able people to swoop in and make them fly.
Still a little unsure, she prayed about her new concept, asking the Lord to give her five signs. And did He ever deliver! From Monday to Friday she received a daily sign from God, indicating that she could go ahead with her dream, and boy, did she move full steam ahead!
Her final indicator was when a gentleman contacted her, answering an advertisement pertaining to a different matter in Lowvelder, the community’s local newspaper. When Marcel explained the concept of Guardian Angels to him, without revealing the name of her new volunteer programme, he asked her how she found her wings, because only an angel would start a concept like this!
The news spread throughout the community and with the first article in Lowvelder, she felt truly blessed as within the first two weeks a new volunteer was recruited every day! The article brought in 15 volunteers ( 4 of these were men)!
Marcel’s very significant dream encases so many aspects, one of them being for Guardian Angels to spread its wings to many communities. She appeals to all those reading this to get involved. There are so many ways to do this, and Marcel is willing to guide all those interested to utilise any talents they may have, and at the same time bring hope and love to those in need.
A vision that started with an idea, was born on 15 January 2010 and grew to 52 volunteers in just two months and still grows daily! Become part of this phenomenal family today. Not only will you touch someone’s life in an amazingly significant manner, your life may be blessed too! For it is truly in giving that we shall receive!
Today I stumbled and once again
Was lifted up by an unseen hand
What comfort and joy that knowledge brings
For I hear the whisper of Angel wings
The Guardian Angels God sends to all
To bear us up when we stumble and fall
Trust Him, my friend, and often you’ll hear
The whisper of Angel wings hovering near. (Anonymous)
In parting, Marcel would like to quote Psalm 103 versus 20-22 –
Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do His will.
Guardian Angels are known as a dynamic volunteer group – where you don’t sit around and wait for things to happen but we MAKE things happen. So if you a go-getter we need you! Your town needs you !
All branches focus exclusively on the elderly, offering them companionship. Depending on the availability of volunteers, we can fulfill this need quickly otherwise the elderly wait to meet their ‘Guardian Angel’. Each town has adjusted the programme to suit the needs of the town.
For example in some towns we just have a games morning once a week. Elderly attend and enjoy a morning with those their own age while the volunteers have a great opportunity to help and get to know each other as well.
Each branch is led by a Coordinator, Secretary and treasurer.
For more info, please contact the individual branch that is closest to you.
